The short version

This is a social gathering, not a race. You drive your own car, at your own pace, on public roads that are open to normal traffic, and you are responsible for your own decisions and for everyone riding with you. If anything about the day doesn’t feel safe to you, don’t do it — come have lunch instead.

You drive yourself

The Castro Valley to Niles Fremont Classic Car Cruise is not a race, rally, time trial, or contest of speed, endurance, or skill. Nothing about the day is timed, scored, or judged on arrival, and no award depends on when you arrive. Nothing about this event rewards driving quickly.

The roads are open and normal rules apply

All travel takes place on public roads open to regular traffic. You must obey all posted speed limits, traffic signals, and California traffic laws at all times. No road is closed for this event. There is no escort, no pace car, no rolling procession, and no organizer directing traffic at any point.

The route is a suggestion

Any route described by the organizers — on this website, at the safety briefing, or in any event material — is offered for scenic interest only and is not an instruction. You choose your own route and your own pace, and you may leave, stop, turn around, or skip the drive entirely at any time, for any reason.

You alone are responsible for deciding whether road, weather, traffic, and vehicle conditions are safe for you. Roads in the area, including Palomares Road and Niles Canyon Road (State Route 84), are narrow, winding, and unlit in places, carry normal traffic including trucks, and are shared with cyclists and motorcyclists.

Your vehicle and your passengers are your responsibility

You are responsible for your vehicle’s mechanical condition, its legal registration, and for carrying valid insurance and a valid driver’s license. Older vehicles have older brakes, older tires, and none of the safety systems found in modern cars. Know your vehicle’s limits and stay well inside them.

You are responsible for everyone riding in your vehicle, including any rider under 18 years of age.

There is no organized support, sweep vehicle, mechanic, or recovery service. If your vehicle becomes disabled, you are responsible for arranging your own assistance.

Vehicles are left at the owner’s risk

Parking at both gatherings is on public streets. Castro Valley is ordinary street parking, first-come, with no reserved or saved spaces. The Niles show area is reserved for registered vehicles but is still a public street. Neither area is secured, supervised, or monitored, and neither club is responsible for loss of or damage to any vehicle or its contents, however caused.

You assume the risk

Operating a motor vehicle on public roads carries inherent risks — including collision, property damage, injury, and death — that cannot be eliminated. Attending a public gathering of vehicles carries additional risks, including moving vehicles close to people, hot surfaces, and fuel. By registering and participating, you knowingly and voluntarily accept them.

Release and hold harmless

To the fullest extent permitted by law, you release and hold harmless the Rotary Club of Castro Valley, the Niles Rotary Club of Fremont, Niles Flying A, Rotary International, and their respective foundations, officers, directors, members, volunteers, sponsors and agents, and the owners of any property used for this event, from all claims, damages, costs or expenses arising out of your participation, your travel to or from either location, or your operation of or presence in any vehicle — including fire, theft, loss of or damage to property, and personal injury, and including claims arising from ordinary negligence — except as prohibited by law.

Nothing in these terms limits any right that cannot be waived under California law.

Safety briefing

A safety briefing is given at 9:15 AM in Castro Valley and is required for all registered drivers. Participation may be declined or revoked at any time, without refund, for unsafe driving or conduct.

Spectators

Both gatherings are open to the public and free to attend. Spectators and non-registered vehicles are welcome but are not participants, receive no direction of any kind from the organizers, and attend at their own risk.

Photography

Photographs and video may be taken at both gatherings and may be used by either club in event coverage, promotion, and social media. If you’d prefer not to appear, let a volunteer know at check-in.

Registration, weather and refunds

Registration is non-refundable and supports the community service work of the Rotary Club of Castro Valley and the Niles Rotary Club of Fremont.

The event runs rain or shine. If conditions are unsafe, the event will be rescheduled rather than cancelled. No rain date is set in advance. If the event is rescheduled, registrants will be emailed the new date, registrations carry over automatically, and anyone who cannot attend the new date will be refunded. The weather decision is made by the Rotary Club of Castro Valley representative.

If you’re not comfortable, don’t drive it

This is the most important sentence on this page. If the roads, the weather, your car, or how you’re feeling that morning give you any hesitation — skip the drive. Come to Niles by whatever route you like, or come straight to lunch. Nobody will think anything of it, and you’ll still get the good part of the day.
